Q. What wall tie is suitable for use in a separating (party) wall and is in accordance with Part E of the Building Regulations?

A. The Staifix HRT4 Housing Tie has a measured dynamic stiffness of <4.8MN/m3 at a cavity of 50-100mm and 125mm, and is therefore suitable for use in separating walls within this cavity range at a standard density of 2.5 per m2. For more information please contact Ancon’s Technical Services Team on 0114 275 5224.

Q. Should support angles stop at movement joints?

A. Brickwork support angles are sometimes stopped each side of vertical movement joints. Although this does allow clear access for the compressible filler, it is quite acceptable for the support to be continuous across the joint.

The horizontal movement of brickwork will be partly restrained by the bond between the mortar and the angle. As the support system is fixed to the structure, the extent of this restraint will be the same whether the system is continuous or stopped each side of the joint

Support systems are designed to carry the vertical load and do not rely on the bond to the brickwork. Brickwork and stainless steel expand at different rates and it is not unusual for this bond to be broken to allow movement to take place. The wall ties provide restraint but accommodate both horizontal and vertical movement of the brickwork.

Support systems must always stop each side of structural movement joints.

Q. Who is the technical representative for my area?

A. A map can be found in the external contacts section showing the geographical regions each representative covers.
