Visit stand B135 at Ecobuild

Next week, London ExCeL will open its doors for the Ecobuild exhibition and on Stand B135 Ancon will display its latest innovations.

Combining a specially developed Ibstock Kevington lightweight brick-faced steel unit with Ancon’s MDC brick support angle, the Nexus® brick soffit system is a quick and easy solution for creating architectural brick features including deep reveals, soffits and flying beams.

To help designers meet their thermal performance aspirations, Ancon will display a newly expanded insulated balcony connector range that minimises heat loss while accommodating even higher loads. Solutions are available to suit concrete-to-concrete, steel-to-concrete and steel-to-steel applications and can be specified in stainless steel which is 3x more thermally efficient than galvanised/carbon steel. Ancon’s innovative basalt-fibre, low thermal conductivity wall ties, Teplo-BF and Teplo-L will also be featured at Ecobuild. Following recent fire tests at BRE Global, the ties are now suitable for buildings of any height (subject to structural performance) expanding low energy design opportunities for architects and engineers.

To simplify core-to-slab connections in multi-storey concrete frames, Ancon has developed the KSN Anchor system. This is a quicker, easier, and above all safer continuity system. It eliminates the drilling of formwork or concrete and the dangers associated with projecting bars and on site bar straightening. Watch the video.

Specifying modern brick-faced soffits just got easier, with the publication of Ancon’s new 16-page Nexus brochure.

Developed by Ancon and Ibstock Kevington, two of the UK’s leading specialists in structural support and prefabricated masonry components, Nexus is an advanced lightweight system that simplifies the construction of modern brick-faced soffits and lintels - ideal for fast-track projects.

Expanded and updated to include the full Nexus range of soffit units and lintels, the new brochure shows the various options now available for achieving different visual effects by varying the style of lightweight stainless steel carrier and real brick slip bond pattern. Detailed case studies are also included to show how the prefabricated modular units have been used to provide flawless soffit solutions for three distinctly different building types.

Clear installation advice and specification clauses, included in the new brochure, help make life even easier for the specifier and contractor.

Wall Tie Installation – Why it is important to get it right

Poorly installed wall ties led to the collapse of a masonry wall at an Edinburgh primary school. Thankfully, no one was hurt. This month, the findings of an independent inquiry as to what went wrong, were published.

The wall tie embedment in the outer leaf was found to be woefully inadequate and, in bad weather, the action of the wind caused the brick cladding to simply pull away from the inner leaf of blockwork, scattering approximately nine tonnes of masonry on the walkway below.

Wall Ties are a critical structural component in masonry wall construction. If wall ties are installed incorrectly, there is high potential that the wall will not reach its designed capacity and in severe cases, like the Oxgangs Primary School, may collapse.

Ancon has considerable experience and knowledge to share with the industry, and we provided expert guidance to the independent inquiry panel. More information is available in our recently published article:
