Ancon launches new Tension System Cross Coupler

When forming a cross brace using tie bars, the new Ancon Cross Coupler offers a streamlined alternative to an anchor disc. Cross couplers and anchor discs allow bars to lie in the same plane and remove the need to offset bars, with the coupler or disc providing an interesting design feature for the panel.

The cross coupler is the latest addition to the popular Ancon 500 tension system, which provides a high load capacity while meeting the demanding aesthetic requirements of today's applications which can range from sporting stadia roof structures to glazed areas in office developments.

What is a Head Restraint?

Head restraints provide simple support to the top of a masonry panel by transferring lateral load (usually wind or internal pressure load) from the masonry to the primary structure.

It is common practice to include head restraints in most types of wall, particularly in external cavity walls where lateral loads are greatest.

Ancon has three types of head restraint available: IHR, FHR and SAH.

How to specify timber frame wall ties

We are frequently asked to advise on the specification of wall ties for timber frames. Ancon recommends that when tying a masonry outer leaf to a timber frame, in a UK town or city, wall ties should be specified to the Types in BS 5268-6.1: 1996: Structural use of timber.

This document provides recommendations for wall ties in timber framed buildings. Information is provided for the type of structure, location, embedment, density and positioning. Ties are classified as Types 5 to 7 with minimum declared values in tension and compression listed for Types 5 and 6.

Although BS 5268 was officially withdrawn in November 2009, it is Ancon’s opinion that timber frame wall ties should continue to be selected from the information given in Annex B, BS 5268 Part 6.1: 1996, until further industry guidance is made available.

How to build safer concrete construction joints

Constructing core to slab connections in multi-storey concrete frames can present dangers to site operatives. Traditional re-bend continuity systems involve the heavy manual work of on-site bar straightening.

CARES-approved KSN Anchors represent a completely new approach to reinforcement continuity at slab-to-wall construction joints.

The KSN system comprises internally-threaded anchors which are cast into the wall and, during construction of the adjoining slab, accept continuation bars prepared with a Bartec Plus parallel-thread. This is the faster and, above all, safer system.

There is no on site bar straightening and virtually no restriction on bar length, so EC2 lap lengths are easily accommodated. Unlike re-bend systems where bar length, spacing and diameter are restricted by physical box dimensions, KSN Anchors provide total design flexibility.
