How to join a new wall to existing brickwork
There are various occasions when a new wall needs to be tied into existing masonry e.g. house extensions, garden walls and conservatories. Wall starter kits are fast and easy to install and replace the traditional ‘toothing out’ method.

What is a thermal bridge? How can thermal bridging be minimised?
Energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important in today’s building designs and the thermal performance of the insulated building envelope is a key design consideration.
Low Thermal Conductivity Cavity Wall Ties
Wall Ties are an essential element in the strength and stability of cavity walls, but by crossing the cavity they act as a thermal bridge between the internal and external leaves. Generally speaking, the wider the insulated cavity, the more substantial the Wall Tie needs to be and the greater the effect the tie will then have on the U-value of the wall.
What are low thermal conductivity wall ties?
Ancon Teplo wall ties comprise pultruded basalt fibres set in a resin matrix which offers a thermal conductivity of just 0.7W/mK. The thermal efficiency of this innovative material means these ties are excluded from U-value calculations to BS EN ISO 6946, minimising insulation thickness and wall footprint.

Cavity Wall Tie Spacing and Appropriate Tie Lengths
This post discusses the most common problems associated with the incorrect use of cavity wall ties and how to overcome these.
What is a wall tie?
Wall ties, sometimes called ‘brick ties’, are used in buildings with cavity walls. They are used to join the two leaves of a cavity wall together.
What is a Head Restraint and why are Head Restraints required in masonry panels?
Head Restraints provide simple support to the top of a masonry panel by transferring lateral load (usually wind or internal pressure load) from the masonry to the primary structure, whilst allowing some vertical movement in the frame in relation to the top of the wall.
How to specify timber frame wall ties
When tying a masonry outer leaf to a timber frame, in a UK town or city, wall ties should be specified to Types 5 to 7 in BS 5268-6.1: 1996.
